Calls .... high-pitched, piping whistle ends in a shrill " KIWI ! KIWI ! " Calls are heard only at night. Nest built of dried leaves and grasses at the end of a burrow. Eggs .... Laid in July through February. An egg can weigh 15 oz, nearly one quarter of the weight of the bird carrying it. Birds A RARE BIRD, indeed!
